My partner and I have (actually used to have) a 60' ponderosa pine
tree near our cabin, located at 9,000' elevation in the Colorado
Rockies. One day while we were away, lightning hit it. When we
returned, it was now 7' high. Suprisingly enough there weren't any
real obvious burn marks, it just appeared to have been dynamited.
The force of the explosion was pretty great. We found relatively
small pieces of wood 100 yards away and there was the equivalent
of a 10' 2*4 rammed length wise THROUGH the wall of an out-house
about 50' away (which would have probably really helped things along
if anyone had been sitting it it :-)
